dude, the original olympic games had like less than 10 sports in it. And being an olympic athlete is a lifelong dream for some people. Why would you ever say that their dreams are a waste? Sure, it may not be the most beneficial profession compared to scientists and doctors and businessmen, but athletes are doing what they love, and they've made it clear that that's the only thing they would want to be doing.
